North America and Europe have fewer square miles of surface area than the moon: 14.2 million for the two continents versus 14.6 million for Earth's natural satellite. In 1992, archiitect Madhu Thangavelu argued that explorers operating from a fixed surface base - the traditional advanced lunar exploration scenario - could hope to survey only a small fraction of moon. He proposed that NASA replace the fixed-site base approach with a "roving base" that would, in a single ambitious mission, explore multiple sites along a 6600-mile traverse route.
