The search for exoplanets is about to go to a new level. The Gemini Planet Imager, a smart-car-sized apparatus, will make the Gemini telescope in Chile the first to directly see exoplanets using ?extreme? adaptive optics instead of merely inferring their existence by how they affect the stars they orbit.
